Shedding Some Light on Candles

Here in mid-winter, you may find yourself burning more candles than at other times of the year.  It makes sense. The nights are long and freezing cold. Just the sight of a candle’s flame brings a sense of warmth. And if it’s scented - all the better. Warm vanilla, Pumpkin pie and Spiced cranberry are all scents that invoke home, comfort and warmth.

But did you know that your beautiful, delicious smelling wax candle is full of chemicals, even carcinogens?  Wax, paraffin, is a by-product of the oil refining process. When the candle burns, chemicals and pollutants are released into the air and end up on the sides of your candle holder in the form of black soot. You may have noticed it on your walls after burning multiple candles at once or when burning them in an enclosed space, like a bathroom as well.  Soot also gets into your lungs when you inhale while burning candles and can exacerbate allergies.

And that’s just the paraffin. There are also artificial scents and coloring and wicks that contain lead.

Of course, the majority of us are doing no great harm to our bodies when we have a candlelight dinner once in a while. But if you like six candles on your tub once a week that might be a different story. Knowing that our bodies are battling the effects of pollution day in and day out why not make our home environment as chemical free as possible?

One easy step you can take is to burn soy or beeswax candles, which actually burn 30-50% longer than wax. Herbal House Products carries Prosperity Candles, which are soy or beeswax/soy combinations that are either unscented or are scented with essential oils and contain cotton wicks.  In addition to offering chemical-free candles, Prosperity also has a mission of helping improve the lives of women, in particular refugee women. So when you purchase candles from Herbal House Products, you help yourself to be healthier, you help a small business thrive, and you help women from around the world to live productive lives.

Thanks - for all you do!

Why Can't I Lose Weight?

Are you someone who diets and exercises, but cannot lose weight? Do you have pockets of fat under the arms or a “poochy” tummy? Had you considered that it might not be your diet, but your exposure to chemicals and toxins? It’s impossible to avoid all toxins in our environment, but our bodies have an excellent way to eliminate them for us.

The liver and kidneys are responsible for cleansing our system of harmful chemicals, food additives, pesticides, drugs, alcohol and more. Research has shown that when the liver is unable to keep up because of the high amount of toxins in the body, the toxins will bypass the liver and be stored in fat cells until such a time as they can be cleansed from the system. Even though they are stored in these cells, toxins can still affect us making us unhealthy and making it harder for the liver and other organs to do their jobs.

One way to slow this process and maintain good health is to use all-natural products like those we sell at Herbal House Products. Our cleaning products are made with essential oils and contain no harsh chemicals whatsoever. Our mineral makeup is made without the use of added scents, chemicals, dyes, bismuth oxychloride, parabans, or fillers and, by the way, is gluten-free. The alpaca products are either natural colors or dyed with vegetable dyes and when burning the soy candles you will not be exposed to the harmful chemicals that wax candles produce. Plus soy candles burn up to four times longer than wax.

Give your body the break it needs by purchasing all-natural products for your home. You’ll be glad you did!

Thoughts on Autumn

If we didn’t realize time was flying by, the weather has certainly gotten our attention. At least where I live, it suddenly feels like fall. The bare limbs of the trees outstreched against an overcast sky is a sure sign of November on the Colorado plains. If you look out at daybreak, you might even catch them with a dusting of powdery snow.

So, if it’s November, Thanksgiving cannot be too far off. I have many thigs to be thankful for this year including getting this website up and running after nine months. But I’m also thankful for the not-so-tangible things of life: sunshine, clear skies, friendship and fellowship, charity among strangers.

Wishing you the best of Thanksgivings.

A Little of This and a Little of That

The dust is beginning to settle a bit from the opening week. I’m getting caught up on email and have ordered and received new items that will be available closer to the holidays. Stay tuned for the unveiling! I think you’re going to love them!

I am always interested in new products that are free of artificial scents and colors. Some popular cleaning products, available at the grocery store, advertise that they are “natural.” But check out their labels before you decide to buy. Many are just trying to get your attention because they know that consumers do want products with fewer chemicals. Many times, you’ll find they are using artificial color, scent, fillers, etc. My promise to you is that to the best of my ability, I will provide products that are 100% natural. And don’t forget that the mineral makeup we offer is also gluten free!

Speaking of makeup… if you don’t see the exact color of foundation or blush that you would like, please contact me and I will do what I can to get the right color for you. And don’t forget you can order samples of foundation to try out before buying a whole jar.

Thanks for checking in! See you next time.

Hello from Herbal House Products

As a new blogger and a new online business owner, it’s a little intimidating to come up with a blog. But as an English major with a concentration in Writing, I think I can manage.

So welcome! Welcome to Herbal House Products! A company that was started in response to the overwhelming amount of chemicals we all deal with in our daily lives, in our own homes and out in the world. I happen to own and operate a housecleaning business and I can tell you that involves a lot of chemicals. Anyone who cleans house is at risk from the many side effects suffered from inhaling chemicals. They aren’t all harsh or especially strong, but they aren’t good for you either. And fighting them takes a toll on your body.

In addition to the housecleaning products, we also have all natural, gluten free makeup! We offer various shades of foundation, blush and eye shadow, as well as multi-use minerals. All are beautiful and contain only what you see. We’ve also provided tips about using mineral cosmetics and whether your a pro or new to minerals you will find helpful tips and other interesting information about chemical free cosmetics.

Lastly, I want to introduce our Alpaca line. I’m a huge fan of alpaca and have been ever since I was introduced to their soft fleece. They are much like llamas, but much smaller with a sweet face and rather small ears.
